Karna is one of the central characters in the Hindu epic Mahābhārata, from ancient India. He was the King of Anga and one of the greatest warriors whose martial exploits are recorded in the Mahābhārata. He was successfully conducted Digvijay Yatra, conquering all kings in every direction in order to establish Duryodhana as the emperor of the world and to conduct the Vaishnava sacrifice.
The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. It contains philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four “goals of life” or purusharthas besides its epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pandava princes.
Shivaji Sawant was a renowned novelist in Marathi and is known for writing the famous Marathi novel Mrityunjay. The novel based on Karna, one of the leading characters of the epic Mahabharat. The novel gives an account of Karna’s life from childhood to death from his point of view. This book was translated in Hindi (1974), English (1989), Kannada (1990), Gujarati (1991), Malayalam (1995) and received numerous awards and accolades.
Shivaji Sawant’s Mrityunjaya is an outstanding instance of the search for the meaning of Being is man’s eternal quest and the subject of his greatest creations.
