Muslims believe the Quran was verbally revealed by God to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel (Jibril), gradually over a period of approximately 23 years, beginning on 22 December 609 CE, when Muhammad was 40, and concluding in 632 CE, the year of his death. Quran, according to Islamic dogma – is:
• divine guidance for mankind, the last Holy Book revealed by Allah;
• the eternal and uncreated Word of God, the testimony of prophecy and the last heavenly revelation, which confirmed the validity of all previous Holy Scriptures and has abolished the proclaimed by them laws and approved the final and most perfect celestial law;
• miracle, one of the proofs of prophethood of Muhammad, the culmination of a series of divine messages. Divine messages began with Adam and included the Scrolls of Abraham, the Taurat (Torah), Zabur (Psalms) and the Injil (Gospel).
Kanzul Iman is a 1910 Urdu paraphrase translation of the Qur’an by Ahmad Raza Khan, and is associated with the Barelvi branch of Sunni Islam. Urdu is historically associated with the Muslims of the region of Hindustan. It is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan, and an official language of six Indian states and one of the 22 scheduled languages in the Constitution of India.
