Tamil – is the southernmost of the Dravidian languages. It is spoken by the population of southern India, from north of the border line (which ends in Telugu), passing a few miles to the north of Chennai, to the Cape Comorin in the south – that is, almost all the southern tip of India except a narrow strip along the western shore that is occupied by akin to the Dravidian language – Malayalam. In addition, the Tamil is spoken in the northern half of Ceylon. The first written evidence of the ancient Tamil language belongs to the II century BC. These were brief notes on the walls of caves and on pottery made by one of the varieties of Brahmi script. The first long-language text – Tolkāppiyam dates from the I century BC. Besides him remained a lot of other works. The ancient Tamil preserved many features of Proto-Dravidian language, including syllable structure and the many features of the grammar. Tamil is one of the 22 official languages of India and has official status in the state of Tamil Nadu. In addition, it is one of the 2 official languages of Sri Lanka (along with Sinhalese) and one of the 4 languages of Singapore (with Malay, Chinese and English). Tamil literature has a rich and long literary tradition spanning more than two thousand years. The oldest extant works show signs of maturity indicating an even longer period of evolution.
